American Hwangap is the story of a Korean American family that is reunited to celebrate the father figure's 60th birthday (the Korean tradition of hwangap). However, Min Suk Chun's ex-wife and children (now adults) have moved on, and he struggles to obtain forgiveness from his family members. At the end of the play, Min Suk Chun drunkenly climbs a tree and asks his ex-wife to marry him again.
Using a thrust seating arrangement, and the unique architecture of Halcyon Theatre's space, we created a climbable tree in the archway, with the Texan mountains in the distance as the backdrop for our production. A raised platform for the dining room helped define the space, and indicate a different location from the carpeted basement. The solid hardwood moat surrounding the space was a flexible area used for David (Chun's son's) office, an outdoor space, and a lake.
